Ingredients:
Unsalted Butter:
The primary ingredient for making desi ghee. Choose high-quality, preferably organic, unsalted butter for the best results.
Instructions:
Melting the Butter:
Place the unsalted butter in a heavy-bottomed pan or a stainless steel pot. Heat the butter over medium-low heat until it melts completely.
Boiling and Simmering:
Once the butter is melted, it will start to bubble and boil. Reduce the heat to low to prevent the butter from burning. Allow the butter to simmer gently.
Clarification Process:
As the butter simmers, it will begin to separate into three layers. The top layer consists of foam or impurities, the middle layer is the clarified butter (ghee), and the bottom layer contains milk solids.
Skimming the Foam:
Use a spoon or ladle to skim off the foam from the surface of the melted butter. Discard the foam as it consists of impurities.
Straining the Ghee:
Once the foam has been removed, continue simmering the butter until the middle layer (ghee) turns golden brown and fragrant. At this stage, carefully strain the ghee through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any remaining impurities or milk solids.
Cooling and Storing:
Allow the strained ghee to cool to room temperature before transferring it to clean, dry glass jars or containers with a tight-fitting lid. Store the ghee at room temperature or in the refrigerator, depending on your preference.
